Clivio succesfully completed the first race of the GP2 series crossing the finish line in 15th position.
Having suffered a recurring electronic problem yesterday, Clivio qualified in 23rd position and started at the back of the grid. The race started with a rolling start and for the first three laps, Clivio experienced a slight problem with the engine which prevented full acceleration on the straight. This corrected itself by lap 4 and Clivio was able to catch Fauzy in the DAMS. An on track battle then took place with ex-Minardi F1 driver Gianmaria Bruni that saw Bruni overtake Clivio and then Clivio reclaim his position.
Clivio was in 9th position when he came in for his first of two pit-stops on lap 14. All went smoothly until as he accelerated away the anti-stall was activated. With the restart at least 30 seconds were lost until Clivio was able to leave the pits.
Rejoining the track Clivio was able to catch the field and was running in 20th position. An on-track battle with Alvarez resulted in Alvarez going off into the gravel and Clivio making up a further position. With no cars ahead of him, and with the car feeling consistent Clivio was able to really push and put in some fast laps.
By lap 34, Clivio was in 17th position as he came in for his second pit stop. Unfortunately he experienced the same problem with the anti-stall as he went to pull away. This time it was almost a minute later before he was able to exit the pit lane. For the final stretch, a clear track gave Clivio the chance to post some fast laps, but he was unable to improve on 15th position.
"The start went well but for the first three laps I wasn't able to get the most out of the engine for some reason. Luckily this problem corrected itself and for the rest of the race the car felt very good and consistent so I think we found a very good race set-up. There was a lot going on on the track and a few drivers made mistakes so I stayed close behind and drove consistently waiting for the moment to get past them. If I hadn't lost so much time in both pit stops I could have finished in the points, but still I am satisfied as I had no more reliability problems and that the car felt very good in race trim. With the first GP2 race under my belt I am looking forward to tomorrow."
