Fastest lap and two valuable Championship points for Clivio

Clivio Piccione made an excellent early start in the sprint race and shot off the back of the grid to pull up five places by the end of the first lap.

Clivio continued to charge his way through the back of the field and by lap 5, was piling pressure on Nelson Piquet Jnr for 11th position. Clivio finally succeeded in passing his old rival before the DAMS car of Lopez crashed out to trigger the first Safety Car phase.

With 13 laps to go, the Safety Car came in and Clivio was straight on the attack of Adam Carroll. In trying to overtake him, the two cars touched which resulted in a damaged nosecone for Clivio.

Nine laps from the end, race leader Oliver Pla retired close to the track which caused the second Safety Car phase of the morning. Clivio took the opportunity to come in for a quick pitstop to change his nosecone and returned to the track to post the fastest lap of the day with a 1:34.336. The Durango driver earned himself two valuable Championship points and crossed the finish line in 16th position.

Clivio:

"I'm very pleased with the way today went as it was hard to pull anything back from the back of the grid. I managed to pull up from 24th to 10th place at one point. My start went extremely well and I climbed up several positions straight away. The car was very strong and I had good pace so I just kept ploughing through the field.

After a few laps, I was caught battling with Nelson Piquet Jnr for a while but managed to overtake him before the first Safety Car came out for Lopez.

After that, I put pressure on Adam Carroll, went to overtake him on the first corner and touched him which damaged my nosecone. Luckily the Safety Car was called out for another incident just before the end of the race so I was able to come into the pits and change my nosecone. We did a very fast pitstop and when I came back out on track, I just went all out to post a fast lap time. That was the only thing left for me to do and I managed to clock up the fastest time of the day just before the end of the race. So I'm really happy with the way it went today. I raced well, the car was looking good and I managed to bring home two more Championship points which is the best I could do considering I started from the back of the field."
