Mechanical problems force Clivio to retire

With the disqualification of ART Grand Prix cars, polesitter Nico Rosberg and teammate Alexandre Premat yesterday, Clivio gained two places to start the first race of the weekend from 12th position.

At the start, four cars stalled on the grid and Clivio picked his way through the mêlée to pull up one position after the first corner.

Clivio showed good pace and was chasing Garcia and Pla from 8th position when he was called in for his pitstop. Subsequently, he experienced a problem with the exhaust system which damaged the gearbox and left him unable to shift down as he returned to the pits.

Clivio:
"We had a small problem in the pits with the fuel before I went to the grid so I was actually the last one to line up and didn't get in an extra lap. I got a good start: there was only one car stopped in front of me so I pulled around it. Then at the first hairpin, I passed Alvarez. At the end of the straight, I was catching Garcia and Pla. My pace was good, I was able to push and was happy with the car.

On lap 7, the team called me in for the pitstop and that was when the problem started. Three corners before the pitstop, I couldn't change down the gears and then from there until I pulled into the pitlane, it just got worse. The team had a look when I came into the pits and concluded there was nothing they could do so I had no choice but to get out of the car. I'm really disappointed seeing what happened in the race, I think I could have finished in the top five. It's particularly frustrating to have two races in a row where I have been unable to show my potential out on track."
