PIC ON POLE -- FRENCHMAN STARS AMID THE CHAOS

Charles Pic did a sterling job for Arden Motorsport during today's chaotic, rain-hit GP2 Series qualifying session at Hockenheim. It began to rain just as the 30-minute session began -- and the red flag was shown twice as treacherous conditions caught out several drivers. Pic kept his head, though, biding his time as conditions slowly improved and eventually securing pole position with a stunning 1m 41.638s lap that put him 0.268s clear of championship leader Pastor Maldonado (Rapax).

Team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez spun into the Turn One gravel before completing a flying lap, but he was able to resume after the marshals extracted him. The Venezuelan continued to find conditions tricky, however, and will line up 23rd.

Charles:

"This is my first visit to Hockenheim, so it was a pleasant surprise to take pole. It reflects very well on the team, which did a fantastic job to set the car up for today's difficult conditions. After the second red flag, I made an effort to create a bit of clear space ahead -- and then I really put everything into my next lap. The car felt better and better as the track conditions improved and it was one of those days when everything just clicked at the right time. It was very tough at the beginning, when the rain was at its worst, and now we'll just have to see whether or not it rains again tomorrow. Whatever happens, though, I have every confidence that the team will make the right calls. The weather might have been a bit miserable, but I'm smiling. My weekend could not have got off to a better start."

Rodolfo:

"Free practice conditions weren't great, but my previous circuit knowledge helped and I was happy enough to end up 15th. Conditions deteriorated before qualifying -- and so did my car's balance, unfortunately. We made a few changes and I was struggling badly for both front-end grip and traction. We need to understand why I slipped so far from the pace. Traffic didn't help my situation in qualifying, but that's no excuse. I should have done better but didn't feel entirely comfortable in any of the three sectors."
