Nico does it again

Nico Rosberg has taken pole position for the second race weekend in succession with a laptime of 1:24.691. In overcast and gloomy conditions the German was the class of the field once again. He beat this morning's fastest man Scott Speed to pole by just over half a second. The second row of the grid will feature Nico's ART Grand Prix team-mate Alex Prémat and the winner of the last GP2 series race, Olivier Pla. Borja Garcia took his highest placing to date in fifth, ahead of Ernesto Viso in sixth.

The qualifying half hour got underway under dark and cloudy skies, but despite a few drops of rain falling as the session started, a serious downpour never arrived. With the threat of possible rain looming however, all GP2 series drivers bar Gimmi Bruni made their way onto the track as the session began. Rosberg set the initial pace from Speed and Prémat. The three drivers were never headed for the top three positions. Speed hit the top at half-distance with a 1:25.195, but just a matter of minutes later Rosberg was back at the head of the time sheets.

The rain held off for the whole session, but that didn't stop a number of drivers exploring the limits a touch too far. The DAMS entries both had spins at the final corner, and Nelson Piquet Jr, who will feel aggrieved not to have taken pole, was on an absolute stormer in the final minutes until he ran wide in the final sector and blew his shot at the front row. He will line up in eighth, just behind former British F3 rival Adam Carroll, and one place ahead of championship leader Heikki Kovalainen.

1st Nico Rosberg ART Grand Prix.1:24.691
"Starting on pole helps a lot, and hopefully I can get a good start and we'll see what happens after that. We've got to make a few changes to the set up, because there are always things you can improve on the car, especially for the race. So we'll try to get that right for tomorrow and then see what the weather does hopefully it will be dry, although we were quickest in the wet testing session at Paul Ricard so it shouldn't be such a problem. There are always a bigger risk when it rains."

2nd Scott Speed iSport International. +0.504
"We've been really fast here in the morning, so I kind of expected to have a bit of a leg up on everyone. In qualifying Rosberg was obviously a big surprise for everyone. We've been getting great starts lately, so obviously if I can get into P1 at turn one tomorrow, then we can walk. It's going to be close though, realistically he's quite quick, so hopefully we're just there in turn one."

3rd Alexandre Prémat ART Grand Prix. +0.932
"I am happy with this qualifying because I did a good time, although I'm not so happy that the gap to Nico is really big! He was nine tenths quicker than me, and that's not good. On my first and second laps I made some mistakes so I think I should have been able to fight with Speed for second place. So, overall, one or two mistakes, and I was also in traffic, but still I think this is OK because, since Magny Cours, I have been very nice, very confident, and I am doing okay in the races. It's always nice to do well, and I am confident for tomorrow."
