Gearbox problem stalls Clivio's points winning run

Clivio Piccione was forced to retire from the first race at the Hockenheimring with a persistent gearbox problem.

From 10th on the grid, Clivio was unable to get off to a good start and found himself in 14th position by the end of the first lap. Unusually, half the teams on the grid chose to make their mandatory pitstops on the following lap. Clivio came in for his stop on lap 3 and rejoined the track in 16th position after losing some time in the pitstop.

Shortly after rejoining the race, a problem surfaced with Clivio's gearbox which left him unable to change down on one corner. The problems seemed to be rectified but then resurfaced two laps later which forced the Durango driver to come in for an unplanned pitstop on lap 12. The team did their best to sort out the problems and a resilient Clivio took to the track again but now found the problems persisted. He managed three laps before entering the pits for a third time. Determined to stay in the race after some more alterations by his team, Clivio took to the track for a fourth outing. This time he was stuck in third gear and it became apparent he was unable to race and was forced to retire on lap 20.

Clivio:

"I didn't get a great start and lost three positions. As I approached the hairpin on Turn 6, I tried to make a move on the outside but it didn't work and I ran wide. My main focus was to recover my position. Then on lap three, I came in for the pitstop. We lost a bit of time as there was a problem with my left rear tyre. When I rejoined the track, the car felt good so I was focussed on trying to pull up through the field. I managed to get a few good laps in and then I picked up a problem with my gearbox which meant I couldn't shift down. This happened in one corner, then things seemed to be okay for another couple of laps and then it happened again so I came into the pits to see if we could sort it out. The team had a look at the car and tried to resolve the problem but when I rejoined the track, I still had the same problem in changing down. I managed three laps but by lap 18, I just had to come in. The team tried again to sort the problem out and I went out again very determined to get back into the race but this time I was stuck in third gear and I was really slow. The alarm came on the steering wheel so really there was no choice but to retire. This is of course really frustrating especially when I see how far up Kovalainen and Piquet finished compared to where we were on the grid. I could have scored some good points today."
