Daniel Abt: "All in all we have a great car and I hope that we can have good results in Barcelona finally.”
The 10th season of the GP2 Series kicked off with the races on Bahrain International Circuit this weekend. After a great performance in Friday’s qualifying, Daniel Abt ended up in third position, his team mate Facu Regalia started from 19th position.
Unfortunate circumstances and traffic in the pit lane before his pit stop hindered him to fight for the podium. After this misfortune, Daniel Abt was one of the fastest drivers out on track and made up many positions. For Facu Regalia, the feature race on Saturday came to a premature end after a collision on the first lap.
The sprint race on Sunday, Daniel Abt finished in 13th position. The German driver lost some places after the start and made up some positions afterwards. His team mate Facu Regalia had to start from the back of the field and ended up in 20th position.
Franz Hilmer, Team Principal: “The weekend did not run as expected. It started off well with Daniel’s third position in qualifying. The third position was also the best qualifying result for Hilmer Motorsport so far. After the pre-season test days we knew that our cars will be fast in Bahrain. Unfortunately, Daniel made a mistake before the pit stop in the race on Saturday, so he had to come to the pit again and he was at the end of the field. But then he proved his talent and the potential of the car by setting the fastest lap times. A podium position would have been possible.
Facu had a difficult start to the weekend in qualifying which he only could finish in 19th place. After a very good race start, where he gained some positions, he had a collision with a competitor and he had to stop the car. As a consequence he had to start from the end of the grid on Sunday.
He could make up some positions but he was very disappointed about his 20th position in the race. We are now looking ahead and we will concentrate on the positive things. Our car is fast and competitive and we hope that we can show this in Barcelona by having good results.”
Daniel Abt, Driver #11: “I am very happy about third position in qualifying. It is a fantastic start into the new season and I got goose bumps in the car when I heard about the result, I was very relieved. Unfortunately, I made a mistake at the pit stop during the race on Saturday, so my race was literally over. But I could set quick lap times and win some positions. At the start of the Sunday race I lost many positions, which normally doesn’t happens often to me. All in all we have a great car and I hope that we can have good results in Barcelona finally.”
Facu Regalia, Driver #12: “It was a very difficult weekend for me at my first race event in GP2 Series. I was struggling with the car more than expected, especially in qualifying. In the feature race, I had to stop the car after a collision on the first lap. In the sprint race on Sunday, I overtook some cars, but I had too many problems to have a better result. I am looking forward to Barcelona and I hope we will do better.”
