ART Grand Prix's racer Lewis Hamilton closed today a fantastic weekend by taking the sprint race on the German circuit of Nurburgring in the third round of GP2 Series competition. The Brit was joined on the podium by Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre and Argentinean Jose Maria Lopez.
Hamilton won the competition from eighth on the grid after yesterday's amazing victory, where he made up for incurring a drive-through penalty in the first race of the weekend. The British-born racer needed 41m18s772 to complete the 24 laps of the second race.
"It was a fantastic weekend. The team did a great job again. Hard work pays off. It is great to have two wins, it is very good for our motivation and gives confidence for the rest of the championship", commented the man of the weekend.
With Nelson A. Piquet finishing 19th today and taking no points, Hamilton moved to second in the standings one point behind the Brazilean, who maintained the lead after a bad weekend.
"It might have looked easy from the outside but it was extremely difficult. There are a lot of very fast drivers in this championship and I had to push hard all the time," commented Hamilton.
Hamilton, supported by McLaren F1 boss team's Ron Dennis, has proved this weekend what he showed during the winter tests and in the other categories he has raced: he may be the best chance for a British Formula 1 World Champion in the near future.
Arden International driver Lapierre ended up in second place at 1s034 adrift of the winner after a thrilling battle. The Frenchman was unable to hold Hamilton and had to settle with a good podium and important points in the championship that left him in third, two units behind Piquet.
"It was a good championship weekend for us in one way, because Nelsinho didn't score, but Lewis got a lot of points, so that wasn't so good. But we're right in the fight. It's going to be a close championship this year," Lapierre stated.
Super Nova racer Lopez closed a very positive weekend for him after he claimed his first season podium in Nurburgring. The Argentinean had it right there in Saturday's race, but Adam Carroll spoiled that chance in the last lap.
"We thought a lot about yesterday, and we made some changes, and it seemed that the car worked. I struggled a bit with understeer at the beginning, but after half of the race it got better and better", Lopez said.
Lopez had his revenge today and closed the weekend with a result that gives him confident for the coming race in one week in Barcelona, Spain, the circuit in which holds his only victory in GP2.
"It's good to go to Barcelona with a good amount of points, especially after a bad weekend in Imola. The main thing here was to score, and if the car keeps going like this, we can do well", he finished.
Points places were completed by Hiroki Yoshimoto who started on the pole for today's race followed by Carroll and Michael Ammermuller in the top six.
Next week will see round four of GP2 series at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.
