Nelson A. Piquet captured his third pole position of the GP2 Series season today at the Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona, after Lewis Hamilton had his two best laps stripped for not heeding yellow flags warnings.
Alongside Hamilton, five other drivers received the same penalty: Gianmaria Bruni, Nicolas Lapierre, Tristan Gommendy, Lucas Di Grassi and Javier Villa.
This change in the grid meant more that just a pole position for Piquet. The Brazilian maintained the lead in the standings that Hamilton would have taken from him, had the Brit in fact earned the pole. With the two points going to Piquet, he leads with 30 points, to the 26 of the British racer.
Hamilton had set 1:23s372 in qualifying session, wich put him three tenths over Piquet in the timesheets until the news of the times being disallowed came up.
As per the GP2 Series, the official starting grid for tomorrow`s race one in Barcelona has Piquet, therefore, in first followed by Alex Prémat second.
The second row will feature Adam Carroll in third with Hamilton now fourth. Michael Ammermüller will be fifth with Franck Perera sixth, Jose Maria Lopez seventh, Gimmi Bruni eighth, Olivier Pla ninth and Clivio Piccione tenth.
