Great recovery to 8th for Coletti at Spa

The second race of the Spa GP2 weekend was a positive one for Scuderia Coloni: Stefano Coletti boasted a great recovery from P20 on the grid to grab a points finish with 8th place, while Fabio Onidi drove a consistent race passing from P16 to P12. Both drivers were impressively quick off the line, and in the first part of the race the Scuderia Coloni pair really shone.

Onidi, who was starting from eight row, found all the right gaps and at the end of an amazing first lap he was already 9th; one lap later he passed Ericsson for P8 and from then on he started chasing Haryanto, putting pressure on him for seventh place for all the mid part of the race.

In the meantime Coletti’s start was just as good: despite the mayhem caused by two drivers clashing ahead of him in the “La Source” hairpin Stefano found a good line and at the end of lap 1 he had already made up seven places climbing from P20 to P13, while on the following lap he overtook Canamasas for 12th place.

The mid-part of the race saw the situation unchanged, apart from a clash between Gutierrez and Leal that elevated both Scuderia Coloni’s drivers by two places. Onidi still tried to put pressure on Haryanto, while Coletti decided to hold to his place and spare some rubber for the last laps: the Monegasque’s strategy paid off because in the last part of the race his pace was quick enough to overtake team-mate Onidi and then boast a great last corner pass on Palmer to clinch a deserved points finish.

Fabio, instead, had to cope with a bit of tyre wear after stressing his rubber more throughout the race, but he coped well with the situation and managed to cross the line in a good P12.

Paolo Coloni: “I’m happy that today’s recovery showed at least a part of our real potential. Yesterday we had already posted the 2nd fastest lap of Race 1, and today both our drivers did a great job confirming that we had a great package here. Unluckily we were starting far behind but in a normal weekend, with a dry qualifying and a less disrupted Race 1, things would have been much different. Now we will focus on Monza, we’ve already been quick on our home track so we have high expectations”.
