Half of the season has passed and Romain Grosjean is leading in the drivers’ standings again, but only just. Giedo van der Garde is hot on his tail, one point behind, and had the fighting Dutchman not lost a win in Valencia due to a drive through penalty in the Feature Race, things would probably be a bit different on the eve of the fifth round of the 2011 season.

Behind the battling duo, another man looks strong enough to make the break: Davide Valsecchi has pocketed so far one win and one podium. And despite a disappointing opening round in Turkey, the Caterham Team AirAsia man has since then shown consistency and pace. But all eyes will probably be on Sam Bird this week as the Brit lands on home ground with a mission: the iSport ace has been hunting down his first win this season and will be looking to do just that in Silverstone.

The GP2 Series paddock sets camp this week in the temple of motorsport, a fast and flowing track renowned for being tough on tyres with its abrasive surface. The British circuit pushes the drivers to the limit with its mix of corners and high lateral loads.

And to spice things up even more, Pirelli has chosen to provide the GP2 drivers with their medium compounds as Pirelli’s Racing Manager Mario Isola explained: “At Silverstone we will take up the challenge of bringing our GP2 medium compounds to spice-up the action and meet the expectations of the series’ organisers. Specifically, the tyre choice for GP2 is a daring decision. Tyre management will be a key factor because the drivers will have to take extremely good care of their tyres if they want to be competitive and give a hard time to their rivals. Generally speaking, we foresee a different result in terms of tyre wear in comparison to that experienced on other circuits. Silverstone has a significant combination of lateral and longitudinal loads. This is likely to result in the tyres wearing out in an even way instead of mostly in the inner part of the cover, as in Valencia, because of the camber effect.”
