The Rapax team was back on-track this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps for the 8th round of the 2011 GP2 Main Series. The racing schedule at the Belgian venue entered it toughest stages today with the running of race 1, which was affected by rain and slowed down by several safety-car neutralizations due to multiple contacts. The team didn't experienced a positive day on-track. Fabio Leimer was forced to retire after just seven laps due to a gearbox issue, while Julian Leal missed the chance to complete the whole distance because of a spin on lap 15. Following to today's results, Leimer and Leal will take-off from the 12th row on the grid for race q. The start is set for tomorrow at 10:30 with live, free-to-air coverage in Italy by RAI 2.
“It's been a real pity for me as I couldn't play all the cards I had for such an unpredictable race as today's. At the start I got it really good as I was close to the top-10. Then, 2 laps before the time we scheduled for the pit-stop, the gearbox started to become slower in changing gears. The issues got progressively worse until it stopped working completely. At that point there was nothing else to do rather than coming back to the pits and retire."
"The race started in a pretty positive manner for me, as I managed to escape the first-lap contacts. In the dry, the car's handling was great, but then I made a mistake while approaching the "Bus Stop" corner so I decided to get back to the pits early to change the tires. Once back on-track I set the fastest lap of the race, but it didn't last long as the rain suddenly started to fall and I was forced to visit the pits again for some wet rubber. After a few laps I eventually made a mistake at Eau Rouge and that prevented me from myking my way to the finish."
