The 6th round of the 2011 GP2 Main Series went green today with the running of this weekend's race 1. At the end of the 34 laps scheduled, Fabio Leimer brought home 9th place as he just missed a points spot for the Rapax Team, while Julian Leal made it to the checkered flag in 15th place, despite having been forced to a drive-through penalty due to a jump start. In the aftermath of the race, the stewards considered an incident which involved Leimer to be against the rules, and decided to exclude the Swiss from the race. Following to today's race 1 results, Leimer will take off from the last place on tomorrow's starting grid, while Leal will start from the 7th row. The 24-lap long race 2 will go underway at 10:30 AM. Live TV coverage will be provided live by RAI2.
Fabio Leimer “My start has been good and our strategy was centered on changing tires a little later than the others. I kept a good pace but when I went back on-track I struggled with the tires which were colder. In addition to that, the stop itself didn't prove quite as fast as the others, and I lost 3, 4 seconds more than usual. In the following stages I battled with Carroll. I was in his slipstream and I got him stuck in front of me, like if he had missed a gear. I touched him, but I got no damage so I continued and I finished my race”.
Julian Leal "My race was heavily conditioned by the start. I made a bit of a mess with the clutch and I ended up moving before it was allowed. The subsequent drive-through sent me out last. All considered, 15th place is not bad at all. The car was perfect, as confirmed by my fastest laptime, just one tenth of a second slower than today winner's”.
