Jolyon just misses out on top 10 during Hungary debut

Southwater GP2 racer battles hard in difficult conditions at the Hungaroring

British GP2 driver Jolyon Palmer narrowly missed out on a top 10 finish on his debut visit to the Hungaroring last weekend in the closely fought rounds 13 and 14.

The 20-year-old from Southwater, racing in his first season of the F1 feeder series, battled changeable weather conditions during the weekend’s second race to work his way up from 22nd on the grid into an impressive 10th place – making up 12 positions along the way.

But in slippery conditions, the Brit unfortunately spun at Turn 4 on the penultimate lap, ending what had been a promising debut at the 4.138km Budapest track.

After a hard fought finish in the weekend’s earlier Feature Race, Jolyon is now keen to turn his attentions to the next rounds at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium which take place on 26-28 August.

“The weekend’s first race was a tough one,” said Jolyon, who drives for Arden International. "We pitted early and then struggled with a lot of tyre wear. In the end I had to pit for a second time and confusion in the stop cost us a lot of time.

“In the second race I started on slicks in the hope that the damp track would dry out but we were too slow in the slippery conditions. The track got relatively dry but then it started raining again so I had to pit for wets, which was a good move. I got myself up to the top 10 but then I made a mistake at Turn 4 near the end and spun out. I'm hopeful of better pace next time out at Spa though."

The weekend also saw Jolyon being interviewed live during the BBC’s build-up coverage to the Grand Prix where he spoke about his debut season so far and how he’s already secured two top 10 finishes.

The next rounds of the 2011 GP2 series take place at Spa-Francorchamps on 26-28 August.
