GP2 drive 'long way' off, says Rosenqvist

The Prema driver ended his season in perfect style with a dominant performance at the Macau Grand Prix, becoming only the second man in history to win the event back-to-back.

But while he holds out hope that he may get a call-up to join the GP2 test in Abu Dhabi next year – potentially for Prema – he accepts that getting a sponsorship deal together to race may be much harder.

"The logical step is to go to GP2 but it is a long way to get there," he told Motorsport.com. "I have some different offers in other categories, like Japan or America, but my Plan A is to go to GP2."

F1 on hold

Although Rosenqvist has F1 aspirations, he knows that the current financial situation in the sport means drivers like him 'without big pockets' have little hope of even landing a test deal.

"Looking at the business at the moment, it is what it is," he said. "Maybe I am not in a group of drivers who are interesting for teams. They seem to be looking for decent drivers with huge pockets.

"But testing an F1 car is not a goal. I want to race something good, like GP2, and then try to make the next step. If F1 comes it will come."

Economic recovery

He does have faith, however, that teams may be better able to take talent over sponsorship if the world's economic situation improves.

"When you have a drop, especially on the economic side, then we are all suffering from that a little bit," he said.

"I am sure it will bounce back and be good again, but it is a difficult time at the moment. I am sure it is going to turn around."
