VAN DER GARDE FIGHTS BACK FROM 19th TO 8th. PIC FINISHES 11th
BARWA ADDAX TEAM REMAIN TEAM LEADERS, GIEDO 2nd AND PIC 5th
Giedo van der Garde made one of the greatest fightbacks of his career as he climbed through the field to finish 8th, after having started from 19th position on the grid. His team mate at Barwa Addax team had to conform with a 11th place finish in the first GP2 Series race, which took place today at the British Silverstone circuit.
The race started in difficult conditions and due to the wet state of the circuit, the race was forced to start behind the safety car. Giedo van der Garde was outstanding throughout the whole race. He was forced to start from the back of the grid, after having suffered from an accident in free practice which meant that there were difficulties in getting the right set up for qualifications. Giedo like the rest of his rivals followed the safety car for three laps until the decision was made to let the battle begin. Right from the start van der Garde began a glorious fight back, which included his compulsory pit stop with tyre change on lap 13, in what was a tricky race and his 8th position not only means a point gained but also the prize of pole position for tomorrow’s second race.
Charles Pic also drove an intelligent race. Starting from 9th position on the grid, Charles was able to keep his patience as the track started drying out. The team took the risk of setting the car up for dry conditions. After just a few laps, with the circuit drying quickly, he began overtaking rivals to the point of challenging the championship leader, who would later finish the race 4th. He came into the pits to make his obligatory stop with tyre change and came back out on track in a points scoring position, ready to round off his great fightback but unfortunately a collision with a rival car made him lose several positions and with the car in bad shape due to a damaged front spoiler. Despite everything he still managed to hold on to finish 11th. It’s a real shame because at the time of the incident he was ahead of his team mate which meant that he should have been challenging for at least a points scoring position.
Barwa Addax Team remain overall leaders of the team championship. In the driver’s championship, Giedo is second overall and Charles stays in fifth position.
The second race on the English circuit will be raced over 21 laps and will cover a distance of 123.577 Kilometres. The race starts at 09.30 hrs local time.
