BARWA ADDAX TEAM INCREASE THEIR LEAD.
VAN DER GARDE 4th, PIC 13th IN A CHAOTIC RACE.
After the second GP2 Series race which took place today at the Hungarian Hungaroring circuit Spanish Team, Barwa Addax Team, have consolidated their lead in the team championship, after having picked up more points than any other team this weekend. The race was a real lottery due to the everchanging weather conditions and the continuous appearance of the safety car. In this race Giedo van der Garde finished 4th while team mate Charles Pic crossed the chequered flag in 13th.
In this, the shorter second sprint race, which is normally a straight race without pit stops where normally changing tyres is not necessary, most teams have used 3 sets of tyres and with the safety car making 2 appearances, some drivers have benefitted from the circumstances whereas others were affected. With certain drivers favouring one type of tyre and others deciding on another change, it meant that there were a lot of incidents out on the track. Unfortunately Barwa Addax Team was one of the teams worst affected by the chaos because both drivers had made an excellent start and in normal dry conditions they would have added a lot of points to their overall tally. Nevertheless, Giedo van der Garde, who started from 5th on the grid, managed to finish in 4th position after many changes of position and lots of individual battles on the track. Charles Pic was worst affected after having got to first position in the race. A rain shower and the safety car meant all his good work went up in smoke in this chaotic race and he finished in a disappointing 13th position.
Barwa Addax Team go into the holiday break very well positioned in both championships. They top the leader board in the race for the team title and have even stretched their lead over their major rivals. The team is now on 91 points with the second team on 74 and the third place rival back on 60 points. In the driver’s championship both drivers are nicely placed in the top three. Giedo van der Garde is second overall in the driver’s rankings on 49 points followed by Charles Pic in third place on 42 points. The last two events on the calendar for this season should be very exciting with so much top play for and in which Barwa Addax Team is looking for both drivers to continue in the same line.
The GP2 series will return between the 26th – 28th of August at the Belgian circuit of Spa-Francorchamps after the Formula 1 season takes a well earned break for three weeks. With just two events left it promises to be an emotional and exciting finish to the season.
