Charles Pic Makes Podium, 2Nd - Giedo Van Der Garde, 6Th
Barwa Addax Team, Extend Lead Over Rivals.
At the German circuit of Nurburgring, the Barwa Addax Team have performed really well with Charles Pic taking the chequered flag in 2nd position, after having started from pole position, while team mate Giedo van der Garde finished the first GP2 race 6th.
Charles Pic had set the fastest lap time in the qualification session, giving him a well deserved pole position. Charles made a magnificent start and he comfortably led the race in the first lap but it was then that the safety car had to be operated for two laps, after there had been an accident towards the back of the field leaving two cars stranded on the track. When the race got under way again Pic started to take control of the race setting fastest lap times and little by little he started to pull away from his rivals. On lap 13 he came in to make his pit stop with tyre change included, to cover the championship leader who also boxed at this time . Unfortunately his immediate rival took the risk of boxing one lap later and it was enough to give him the lead. The French driver pressed and attacked but was unable to get back into the lead, although he managed to set a race rhythm that was too much for the drivers who were just behind him and he finally finished in a more than comfortable second position.
Giedo van der Garde started from 5th position on the starting grid. It was a good performance in qualification considering he hardly had had any practice time in the free session due to problems with the accelerator. After a good start Giedo held on to his fifth position and after the safety car he attacked the rival who was just in front but was unable to get past. In these circumstances he took the risk of an early pit stop with change of tyres and he came back out on track in 17th position. From this point on he started to make a magnificent fightback which took him up to 6th place. At one point of the race he was completely held up by Valsecchi who did everything in his power to defend his position despite having the advantage of fresher tyres after having boxed for a second time. He had also previously come off track and really had little option of making any progress, as was demonstrated with his 14th place almost one and a half minutes behind the winner. Van der Garde was clearly hampered by his rival and his progress in the race was affected by a battle with an inferior rival that made no sense whatsoever. He finished 6th which means that he will start from third position for tomorrow’s second race.
Barwa Addax Team extend their lead in the overall team championship with a real possibility of picking up more points in tomorrow morning’s second race. In the driver’s championship Giedo consolidates his second position overall and Charles moves up to third in the general classification. The Spanish team now has both drivers in the top three.
The second race in Germany, will be raced over 24 laps, covering a distance of 122.628 Kilometres. The race starts at 10.30 hrs tomorrow, local time.
