Luca Filippi, driving the Dallara-Renault from Super Nova International, gained today the pole position for tomorrow`s GP2 Series race one of the weekend at the Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey, for the eighth round of the season.
The Italian looked strong throughout, running in the top six for the entire session and putting paid to his previous preference for the medium compound tyre. Filippi was fastest on his first set of the hard tyres, and set the two fastest laps on his second set, finishing the session with a time of 1:34.278.
"I'm really happy because we needed this pole, because we had two very bad weekends. We scored zero points, so I got more points with this pole than from the last two weekends. I think our potential was good anyway in the last two weekends. Free practice we were always fighting on top, but here we demonstrated that we are still there and our potential is good", Filippi commented.
Filippi, whose last pole position was in the opening round in Bahrain, where he later won the race, arrived in Turkey third in the standings positions, 20 points behind the leader Timo Glock, and the Italian knows this weekend could be important in his championship aim.
"I'm starting from pole and I think we can score a good result. I am looking forward to a good race for tomorrow and I think we can have a good challenge with them [Timo and Andi]. They are just a little behind me so the start will be very important and then we see"
Indeed, standings leader`s Glock will be alongside Filippi on the starting grid trying to stretch his advantage that right now is just one point over Luca Di Grassi, sixth in today`s qualifying session.
Glock set a fastest lap time of 1:34.502 at the end of the activity to secure the front line in his iSport International.
"It was a pretty good lap and I overdrove maybe the car a little bit in the last sector in the last three corners. I think that maybe a tenth or one and a half, but for a 34.2 was quite quick and I think fastest was not possible for me today, we had too many problems especially with the first set of tyres. We had a different setup, we tried something different and it didn't work out and we went back to the old set-up and it worked out but it was only one shot with one set of tyres. I don't think that we could go faster than a 34.2, not possible", the German explained.
Andreas Zuber had another strong performance to notch third place giving iSport International the chance to close a good day, and even better thinking in their chances for tomorrow`s race.
"Qualifying was quite OK, just a little bit of traffic and on my quickest lap I did a mistake in the last corner but as Timo said a 34.2 was a very good lap from Luca and would be very difficult to beat. So I'm quite happy with third place", stated the Austrian driver.
Right behind Zuber came Giorgio Pantano, Adam Carroll and Di Grassi, who after the activity on the track said he is going to take the lead in the championship. Just wait and see.
The qualifying session in the Istanbul Park circuit started with temperatures slightly lower than during the morning`s free practice but still hotter than at most circuits of the season.
