Bianchi seventh and a scare for Rigon on an unpredictable Istanbul Sunday
Sunday’s GP2 race, the second of the opening weekend of the season, threw up plenty of surprises. Stefano Coletti won for Trident Racing, ahead of Giedo Van der Garde (Barwa Addax Team) and Sam Bird (Sport International.) Jules Bianchi’s race ended just a whisker outside the points, as the Ferrari Driver Academy student, in his Lotus Art car, spun after colliding with Romain Grosjean (DAMS) early on in the race. Having slid down the order, Bianchi fought his way through the field making up ten places.
Bianchi’s colleague working with Scuderia Ferrari on car development, Davide Rigon saw his race end just five laps from the flag when he had a bad accident. The Safety Car came out while he was removed from the car suffering a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula. Julian Leal (Rapax) was attempting a passing move down the main straight, but it ended in Rigon’s Scuderia Coloni car ramming the wall. The Safety Car came in with just one lap remaining.
The series is back in action over the weekend of 22 May at Barcelona, along with the fifth round of the Formula 1 World Championship.
