Evans: "I haven't paid a single dollar" since first year of GP2

The 2012 GP3 champion, who has finished in the top five overall for the past two years, said his financial situation left him with very limited options when it came to choosing teams.

After racing with Arden, he joined Russian Time for the next two years and suffered problematic starts to his campaign in both years, including failing to start two races in 2015 due to mechanical issues.

"I've got zero budget, since my first year in GP2 I have not paid a single dollar," Evans told Motorsport.com.

"I just don't have the backing, I don't have a wealthy family, I've got some great personal sponsors that let me live in Europe but I have nowhere near enough to even consider doing a budget.

"I'm really fortunate I had some good seasons in GP2 without providing a budget, we all know it's expensive but then I don't have the luxury of choosing where to go.

"All respect to the teams I raced for but I'm limited where to go because I don't have a budget. That's the life for me and life for someone from my part of the world, we just don't have the backing."

Lacking consistency

Evans joined Campos Racing for his fourth year in GP2 and is currently seventh in the standings. He won the rain-affected feature race at Spielberg, but has not been on the podium in any of the other races.

"[The season] has been interesting, it hasn't gone the way that we had planned, we've had some okay results but the consistency has been really bad," he said.

"Unfortunately, things that worked for the team last year are just not working this year. We can see it on the data we just can't work out why exactly.

"I'm really enjoying working with the team, to be honest, they are a good bunch of guys and they are working very hard.

"That's the way it goes sometimes, motorsport is like this, from year to year things change - whether it's the difference in the tyre, or that the tracks got different surfaces.

"At the moment it's not falling our way but we are still in the championship mix so it's not all over. We should find some answers soon so we can be a bit more consistent."

Another GP2 season possible

As a lack of money leaves him with limited options for his future, Evans said another season in GP2 is not impossible - but admitted five years in the F1 feeder series would be "a bit crazy".

"At the moment. it's really hard to become a professional driver," he added. "So I wouldn't rule [staying in GP2 next year] out, I'll have to see what my options are like.

"I never planned to come for four years or even three years. The plan was always a two-year thing for me but it hasn't worked for me that well in GP2.

"It just hasn't clicked unfortunately in terms of the consistency for a season for a number of reasons, I'm not putting blame on anyone else or myself, it just hasn't worked out."

"I'm hoping some good results this year will lead to some good things but at the moment it's becoming quite difficult."
