Ho-PIN TUNG ENDS DIFFICULT WEEKEND WITH TENTH PLACE
The first 2010 raceweekend in the GP2 series at the Catalunya track near Barcelona ended on a positive note for Dutch-Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung. During the first race on Saturday he worked his way up from place 22 tot finish 13th. The young Chinese driver ended the race on Sunday at 10th place. "It was a difficult weekend but it showed a lot of promise", he explains afterwards. "We made good progress with the car and we are on the right track".
The DAMS team worked very hard the last couple of weeks to solve a problem with the car which was recognized in the final hour of testing in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago.
"In free practice on Friday it went very well. I didn't know what to expect due to lack of useful information after changing the car so much after testing". Tenth fastest was very hopeful. "Unfortunately we made some wrong decisions set-up wise and we ended up slower in qualifying as we were in free practice". He could only manage 22nd position in qualifying. In the first race he started well and overtook some opponents but lost some track positions when he tried hard to avoid some colleagues on the track and ended the race in 13th place. "Altough we had some difficulties during the weeknd we made a good step in the right direction. We have made a lot of progess." Race 2 confirmed the progress made while he was able to have some good fights and passed the finish line in 10th place.
The next race on the GP2 calendar in Monaco is a special case. "In Monaco the driver is more important compared to other tracks. I have a lot of confidence to finish the race in good position." The last time Ho-Pin Tung raced in Monaco he finished in second.
