FDA -- Bianchi on pole in Barcelona

Montmelo (Barcelona), 7 May 2010 -- At the same time as the European leg of the Formula 1 season has got underway at the Montmelo circuit, the sixth year of the GP2 Main Series, the stepping stone to Formula 1, created in 2005 as a replacement for Formula 3000, is also starting its season here. Eleven of the current Formula 1 drivers came into the sport through this series and no doubt more will follow. At the end of qualifying, held this afternoon at the Catalunya circuit, it was Jules Bianchi who took pole: the Frenchman entered by Art Grand Prix, set the quickest lap in a time of 1.27.727, to qualify ahead of Mexico's Sergio Perez (1.28.011) driving for the Barwa Addax Team and his team-mate, Sam Bird (1.28.241.)

Bianchi is one of the five drivers selected by the Ferrari Driver Academy: the young hopeful will be tackling two races this weekend, the first tomorrow at 15.40 and the other on Sunday at 10.35. The junior formula to GP2 is GP3, in which Ferrari Driver Academy member Mirko Bortolotti is competing. He took part in free practice today and thankfully he escaped injury when he went off track early on at the wheel of the car entered by Spanish team Barwa Addax. The session was dominated by Dutchman Renger Van Der Zande (1.38.664) while Bortolotti only managed five laps on his way to seventh best time (1.39.181.) The lights go green for the all important qualifying session tomorrow at 8.45, in preparation for the first race of the season.
