Back problems hunts Bakkerud
After an extra formation lap due to a problem with one of the cars at the back of the grid, the start of the GP2 main series season finally got under way at the Circuit de Catalunya outside Barcelona. Danish racer Christian Bakkerud made a fantastic start and moved from 19th place on the grid to a much better 11th place on one lap, overtaking 8 cars in the process. With the rest of the feature race ahead of him, things were looking promising for the Dane. However, starting lap two Christian spotted a gap on the inside of Ben Hanley when he ran slightly wide but didn’t count on Hanley moving over to close the door which resulted in the two coming together and spinning around.
In the carnage that followed, the Safety Car was deployed which worked in the Dane's favour for when the field came in for their compulsory tyre change, Christian managed to make it around ending up losing just one lap whilst repairs were made.
Unfortunately the luck and good fortune was not to continue and with 16 laps to go, Christian Bakkerud had to retire with a re-occurance of the same back problem that he experienced for the first time one year ago at the Spanish circuit. Having been helped out of the car, put on a stretcher and taken to the Medical Centre, Christian is now in the good care of his Doctor and his Physiotherapist from Austria. A progress report and comments from Christian will follow in due course.
