PERFECT START FOR FLYING PIC

Charles Pic got his GP2 Series campaign off to a winning start at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona, after a mature driver that belied his tender years. From sixth on the grid, the 20-year-old Frenchman steered clear of a first-corner accident that eliminated pole position qualifier Jules Bianchi and delayed several others. Settling into an early second place, Pic came in for his mandatory tyre change on lap 12 -- and slick pit work enabled him to vault early leader Sergio Perez, the former Arden driver.

Perez's time-consuming stop dropped him to fourth and Pic spent the final laps of the race repelling a challenge from Giacomo Ricci (DPR). He went on to win by 1.4 seconds.

Team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez pledged to make ground from the back of the grid -- and proved to be as good as his word. He kept his nose clean and made solid progress to rise from 24th to 15th.

Charles:

"That was great -- my first win in the GP2 Main Series. I made a very good start, but was a little bit lucky at Turn One. I managed to avoid a multi-car accident and emerged from the corner in second place. After that I just stayed focused and pushed as hard as I could. I was unable to catch Sergio Perez, but then our mandatory tyre stop went very well and he had a problem during his, which dropped him down to fourth. Once I was in the lead I just thought, 'Push, push, push'. I was aware that Giacomo Ricci was catching me during the middle part of the race, but I knew he wouldn't be able to pass if I didn't make a mistake. I just kept my concentration and was able to pull away from him again towards the end. The team has done a great job this weekend, as it has throughout the pre-season preparations. I owe them a big vote of thanks."

Rodolfo:

"I made a good start and picked up nine places on the opening lap. After that I just tried to maintain my early momentum and hustled my way into the top 15. I didn't have enough pace to go any further, but progress is progress and I'll see what I can do tomorrow."
