Super Nova driver Adam Carroll took the victory in race two of the first Formula GP2 series weekend, disputed at Imola circuit; Frenchman Alexandre Premat finished second followed by yesterday's winner, Heikki Kovalainen.
The 2004 British Formula 3 runner-up started the race from fourth place after his fifth-place finish in race one. Carroll pushed hard during the 17-lap sprint and reached the lead halfway through with a stunning move over Premat at Variante Bassa.
"The car was quick, really quick and I just drove it as hard as I could. Today it was good enough and I can't see why we won't be at the front at every track we go to this year", were the enthusiastic words of the winner.
Premat, driver of ART Grand Prix, started the race in the front row, along his teammate Nico Rosberg. The German, who signed with BMW -- Williams as second test driver this weekend, retired on lap 12 after starting from the pole position.
With Rosberg out, Premat became in the only card of ART Grand Prix to take home a good result. Premat who in 2004 won at Macau and Zandvoort in Formula 3 Masters, mentioned: ""It's a great feeling but it was a difficult race. I'm very happy for the team and my mechanics. Since the beginning of the weekend I didn't have much running but for the weekend as I whole I am very happy", he said.
About the move where he lost his chance for the victory, the Frenchman explained: "I had a good fight with Adam Carroll. Unfortunately I made a mistake into Rivazza, and when we got into the final corner I braked late, but he braked even later", stated second finisher.
Despite not being among the winners at Imola, Premat proved how competitive he can be and it is confident for next race at Barcelona. "We got a good set-up there in testing so we should be competitive.", he finished
With two races disputed, we can say that Kovalainen was the man of the weekend at San Marino. The Finn added to his victory in Saturday another podium today by taking the third position in the second race.
Kovalainen started from eighth place and quickly proved faster than some of his rivals ahead. The Finn struggled a lot to reach the top three at the end, though.
"I'm very happy of being on the podium after I started eighth. It's been a hard race but I managed to passed some cars and finished good. The car was like yesterday, so I knew where the limit was", he commented .
The Finn had an interesting fight with Neel Jani for third place that he explains: ""I couldn't get past Jani, and he kept cutting the chicane. He would probably have got a penalty in the end, but he had problems." He finally left the Swiss behind with a very good pass.
Points positions were completed by: Gianmaria Bruni (Coloni Motorsport), Olivier Pla (DPR) and Nelson A. Piquet (Hitech Piquet Sports).
The standings has Kovalainen as leader with 14 points followed by Carroll with 10, Jose Maria Lopez and Bruni on 8, Premat on 7 and Scott Speed on 6 on top six places.
The action for GP2 series will continue on May 7th and 8th at Barcelona circuit on Spain.
