Hungary for more success

Carlin’s GP2 squad face a quick turnaround this weekend, as they head to Budapest for round seven of the 2011 GP2 Series, just days after the last event at the Nürburgring. A points finish for Max Chilton following a difficult weekend for the team in Germany has left the young Brit eager for more in the Hungarian capital this weekend. This weekend’s event in Budapest will also see the return of Mikhail Aleshin to Carlin’s GP2 squad.

Mikhail Aleshin makes a return to the GP2 Series this weekend with the Carlin team. Aleshin is replacing Carlin’s regular driver Alvaro Parente who has a prior racing commitment with McLaren driving the new MP4-12C GT3 at the Total 24 Hours of Spa. Reining Formula Renault 3.5 champion Aleshin has previous experience of Carlin’s GP2 car, having raced with the team in the first two rounds of the season in Istanbul and Barcelona.

Speaking about his return to Carlin for the Hungarian round, Aleshin said, “It’s a great opportunity for me to have this experience, so thanks to the team. I know the car, I know the team and it’s a track I know well so I believe we can push for some good results this weekend.”

Max Chilton ended his weekend in Germany on a high after a difficult qualifying session which saw him positioned at the back of the field. After a tough race one Chilton started race two in 18th place and did extremely well to pass several cars per lap, quickly working his way up through the order – lying in fourth position before pitting for fresh tyres. An unfortunate spin on new cold tyres pushed Chilton back down the order, however he put in some brilliant laps to finish in sixth position and claim the final point in last Sunday’s Sprint race.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s races, Chilton said, “As long as we can keep up the level of performance we had in the last race at Nürburgring, I think it could be a good weekend for us. I’ve only been to the Hungaroring once before, but it’s quite a physical circuit. It’s also really hard to overtake so qualifying will be really important. I think it will be a good circuit for our car though, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The Hungaroring features 16 corners in its 4.381km layout with overtaking notoriously difficult. The weather could play a huge role with showers predicted throughout the weekend which could potentially shake up the order and provide several variables for the drivers and teams to deal with.

The GP2 drivers will take part in one practice session on Friday morning before qualifying on Friday afternoon. Race one will take place on Saturday, including a mandatory pit stop, with race two taking place on Sunday.
