iSport International signs Turkish driver Can Artam'
London (UK) -- Tuesday 15th February 2005 -- iSport International has announced today the signing of Turkish Driver Can Artam to race in their newly created GP2 series team.
"I am thrilled to join iSport International and the GP2 series" said Artam. "We spent a lot of time evaluating the best option. We did not want to rush to make sure we were joining the best team and I am glad that we finally found in iSport International the perfect fit. The team although new is constituted probably by the most experienced people on the grid, it is based in England -- the home of motorsport -- and I know Scott (Speed) from my racing days in the USA. He is probably the most talented American Driver around and I am looking forward to catching up with him and start working together."
"Last year I increased considerably my experience in a challenging championship with a lot of talented drivers. My objective is to further my progression in 2005 and make my way up the field. I am especially excited about racing in front of my home fans later this year in Istanbul." continued Can.
"GP2 is an extremely competitive championship this year. I think it is probably the most competitive grid in years at this level with several of my fellow competitors ready to jump into Formula One. It will be tough but I am ready for the challenge and I know that the team feels the same." Paul Jackson, iSport's team principal, said "we have been talking with several drivers in the last few weeks and Jonathan (Williams) convinced our partners and I that Can was the one. We feel that he could do a lot better than his year in F3000 and the team is fully committed to give him the best support in his quest for success."
"Can completes our team and we are now ready to go for the season. We have assembled a lot of talent in our newly created team who are among the best in their respective disciplines. Our objective this year is not only to finish races but also to aim for podiums. With Scott and Can we have a good combination and we are looking forward to our first test in Paul Ricard on 23rd February 2005."
Jonathan Williams -- Director of the board of iSport International and son of Sir Frank Williams said "I have been tipped about the abilities of Can Artam which is the reason why we started talking to him." "We created iSport International with the intention of developing talent and preparing them for the top racing series. The staff we have managed to assemble have so far successfully contributed to the development of drivers such as JP Montoya, Jenson Button, Bruno Antonio Pizzonia and we hope to repeat these success stories in the coming years."
"We believe Can Artam's margin of progression is substantial and are convinced that he will find the right environment to maximise his talent with us" continued Jonathan Williams. "We are looking forward to a successful partnership with the first Turkish driver to compete at this level and hope that both of our drivers will have a great season."
Ali Gursoy -- Can's manager and owner of steam group said "We are in year two of our plan for Can and GP2 is what we always had in mind. Last year, Can's objective was to get experience in an International Championship and learn the tracks in which GP2 will be racing this year. We are looking to have a very positive year, with a lot of activities around the Istanbul race for Can. It is the first ever Formula One race in Turkey and Can is the first of a group of talented Turkish drivers who can make it to the top. He is working hard and representing a whole nation's desire of success".
"Our objective is now to focus on the pre season test days and gain as much competitiveness as possible before the first race in late April".
