Valencia Street Circuit

GIEDO VAN DER GARDE THE BEST IN VALENCIA. CHARLES PIC OUT OF LUCK.
BARWA ADDAX TEAM HOLD ON TO THE LEAD. GIEDO 2nd AND PIC 5th

The drivers of Barwa Addax Team experienced differing fortunes in today’s first GP2 race in Valencia. Giedo van der Garde finished second after having driven a memorable race but poleman, Charles Pic, was unlucky enough to suffer from mechanical problems before the start of the race.

Charles Pic had deservedly taken pole position yesterday but was unable to take his place on the grid due to mechanical problems. The young French driver was forced to start from the pit lane in last position which ruined all the hard work yesterday. He was determined to make up lost ground when he got out on track but after having climbed through the field he was forced to give up halfway through the race. It’s a pity because he deserved at least a podium place.

Giedo van der Garde was somewhat more fortunate. He was without doubt the best driver on show today even if he didn’t win the race. Giedo made a great start. He controlled the race from the front. He held on to his lead after coming in for his pit stop, with tyre change included, but he was sanctioned for not having respected a yellow flag and shortly he was coming into the pit lane again coming back out in 4th place. However van der Garde has developed into a quality driver of prestige. Instead of allowing events to affect him, he closed down on those that were now leading and put up a sterling fight overtaking the third and second placed drivers. He didn’t have enough time to get to the leader but what he did show was that he was the best driver competing today and could only have been matched by his talented team-mate.

Barwa Addax Team increase their lead in the race for the team title. The rankings in the driver’s championship have changed between the first 5 drivers and the championship looks to be between them. Giedo lies second overall while Charles drops to fifth position.

The second race will be competed over 23 laps of the Valencia street circuit covering a distance of 124.637 Kilometres and starts at 10.35 hrs local time.
