BARWA ADDAX TEAM AND GIEDO VAN DER GARDE HOLD ON TO THEIR LEAD.
INCIDENT AT START AFFECTS VAN DER GARDE AND PIC.
The second race at the Montmelo circuit only lasted 500 metres for the Barwa Addax Team due to a spectacular accident at the end of the first straight, just before the first corner. Giedo van der Garde got caught up in the mayhem and was forced to abandon and Charles Pic likewise had his car damaged.
The leader of the driver’s championship, Giedo van der Garde, started from 7th on the starting grid and was after more points today. He made a tremendous start and was overtaking all rivals that were in front until he came up to Bianchi, who had made a mediocre start and was looking to defend his position. Bianchi suddenly changed direction colliding with Giedo, but he was able to ride the first collision. Van der Garde kept progressing and when he tried to attack from the outside, and gain third place in the process, the French driver cut across him once more which caused another contact of wheels, sending both drivers into the wall of one of the main stands in what was a spectacular accident. That was the Dutch driver’s charge brought to an abrupt end, spoiling what looked to be turning into a promising race after having made up four positions just on the first straight. Bad day for Bianchi who had to be taken away in an ambulance. At the time of writing this article, we have no news of his state of health but we hope he makes a speedy recovery.
The winner of yesterday’s race, Charles Pic, started from 8th position on the grid. He did not make a bad start and he was looking to score more points but like his team mate he was seriously affected by Jules’s accident, which resulted in damage to the nose cone of his car. With it being the short race he was prepared to continue, despite the imperfections to the car but the stewards made him enter the pits to change the damaged piece, after three laps behind the safety car and just as the race got under way again. Pic was in no man’s land when he got back out on track and with very little hope of getting anything from the race. Nevertheless, when he did try to attack he set the fastest race lap time and by quite a margin over the rest. It was a demonstration of his great form the work the team have done on the car and the possibilities he had earlier in the day to improve his overall ranking.
Despite the bad run of misfortunes, which was no fault of either driver, Barwa Addax Team are still leading the team championship even though they did not score any points from today’s race. Giedo van der Garde, also remains at the top of the leaderboard in the driver’s championship and Charles Pic is in a strong position to fight for the honours as he now lies third overall.
The championship moves on now to the Mónaco GP, just week from now. The GP2 races will be driven one day ahead of their normal Schedule. On Thursday there will be the qualifications, on Friday the first and longer race and Saturday the sprint race round the street circuit of the principality.
