No joy for Racing Engineering in GP2 Finale
Racing Engineering have ended up with nothing to show for all of their hard work in Bahrain after more mechanical gremlins struck the team - this meant that there was no chance of fighting for points in race two.
The day got off to a bad start for Neel Jani in the warm up session when his engine failed as he was leaving the pitlane, giving him no chance of doing any laps and forcing the team to work hard on his car once again. Borja Garcia, on the other hand, set the fast time in the session, showing what the team is capable of producing.
However, with Neel starting 16th and Borja further back in 19th there was little chance of a strong performance, and so it proved. Neel did all that he could he had a good start and overtook a number of cars into the first turn, and was clearly determined to get something out of the weekend, but a small mistake in a very tight field lost the Swiss driver a number of places.
He fought back once again and managed to finish thirteenth, which was just eight seconds behind sixth and one point. Borja struggled in the race after using his new tyres in the warm up session, and was unable to push hard enough on old rubber to fight with his competitors. He finished 17th.
However, with the 2005 championship now concluded Racing Engineering finished in fifth place and 65.5 points in their first year in a comparable series, a better result than could have been hoped for at the start of the year. In the driver's championship Neel finished a strong seventh with 48 points, just one point out of the top six, while Borja finished fourteenth with 17.5 points.
Neel Jani: "I want to announce my new GP2 record we did not do one timed lap in any of the three timed sessions, including the warm up, because I went out of the pits and my engine blew! I had a really good start in the race and overtook a lot of cars, but I went wide because I was trying a little bit. The car was not too bad we improved it from yesterday and the team did a great job to get the car ready again they had to work so much during this meeting it's unbelievable."
Borja Garcia: "I had a good warm up session when I was the fastest driver on track, which I think showed what I could do. Unfortunately I couldn't do much in the race because my tyres were old, so it was quite difficult to do anything."
Alfonso de Orleans Borbon: "Not a great race event for us due to the rush of coming out to Bahrain and getting Neel's car ready after the huge accident - all that was left was his seat and a mirror oh, and Neel, of course. We had all the problems that a new car has, so all in all Neel did an amazing job. I was not impressed with Borja."
