The Direxiv Motorsport drivers Hiroki Yoshimoto, Clivio Piccione and Olivier Pla, struggled for grip in the Bahrain heat in the penultimate GP2 race. All three drivers were given the unexpected bonus of starting two places higher after Nelson Piquet Jr and Adam Carroll were penalised for ignoring yellow flags. Yoshimoto turned this to his advantage and ran a strong race to seventh for BCN. Piccione (Durango) also ran in the points, but his car deteriorated on used tyres and he dropped back to 14th. At one stage Olivier Pla (DPR) set fastest lap, but he had an otherwise fraught race, which ended with a gearbox failure.
Hiroki Yoshimoto, BCN Competicion: seventh
"That was a really tough race for the last 10 laps I had no grip. I knew from the track temperature in qualifying that this would be a tough race on tyres and before my pitstop mine were like jelly! But after the stop the car was good and I was able to pass Piccione, who was struggling. At the end Giorgio Mondini held me up, but there were no blue flags for him, and this let my team-mate Ernesto Viso close up. But two points and second on the grid tomorrow is a good result."
Clivio Piccione, Durango Racing Team: 14th
"I made a good start and even though Jose Marie Lopez stalled in front of me I had enough momentum to make up some places. Initially the car was ok and I could set a good pace, but as the tyres became worn I had terrible oversteer and no traction. The car was almost impossible to drive and was hard just to keep it on the track. We need to make a big change to the set-up tomorrow."
Olivier Pla, David Price Racing: retired
"I had a problem early on with a flat spot on the front tyre so I pitted and we changed them. But after this the car felt terrible, so I pitted again for new rear tyres. With these on it was like a completely different car. But then the gearbox developed a problem with the downchange and I had to stop. Tomorrow's race will just be like a test session for me."
Misato Haga, President and CEO, Direxiv Motorsport:
"As expected after Qualifying this morning, this was a tough race. Yoshimoto did an excellent job to finish in 7th and collect two points. Clivio was competitive until his traction problems forced him back down the field. Olivier posted one of the race's fastest laps but a gearbox problem brought his race to an early end."
