Clivio battles with understeer and traction to qualify 12th

Under a blazing sun, Clivio made his first outing at the Bahrain International Circuit to complete two half-hour Qualifying sessions ahead of Race 1 this afternoon in a new format for the final round of the GP2 Championship. Clivio posted the 14th fastest time of the morning but will start from the sixth row of the grid for the penultimate race of the season as both Nelson Piquet Jnr and Adam Carroll were penalised for setting their fastest times under the Yellow Flag.

In the opening session, Clivio took to the track early on and clocked up the fourth fastest time in his first run. Lack of grip left Clivio unable to improve on his time and he ended the first session in 9th position.

With just half an hour before the next Qualifying round started, the team made several adjustments to the suspension of the car before Clivio returned to the track ten minutes into the second session.

As temperatures soared, Clivio went out on new tyres and posted his fastest time on his first run of the session. The young Monegasque driver experienced understeer throughout the session and will start the afternoon race from 12th position on the grid.

Clivio:
"It's been a pretty frustrating morning as we were battling with grip which meant I wasn't able to show my full potential here in Bahrain. In the first session, the car felt pretty good to start with but it was sliding a lot on the exit of the slow corners so I was losing a lot of time and I ended up in P9.

Then we only had thirty minutes to make changes to the set-up before the next Qualifying started and I ended up missing the first ten minutes of the second session. I went out again on new tyres straight away and at the end of my first run I was eighth fastest. But I still had a lot of understeer on the slow corners so when I came in for a tyre change,we made some changes to the balance of the car. When I went out again on fresh tyres, the traction was worse than before so I couldn't improve my time.

The conditions are pretty tough here in Bahrain as the track is really dirty off the racing line which is going to make overtaking very difficult. Also the heat is going to play a big part in the outcome of both races as its pretty challenging physically and also for the car as the engine temperature is running pretty high. We are normally stronger in race trim than for Qualifying though so I'm looking to pull my way up through the field this afternoon and secure a good grid position for the final race of the season tomorrow."
