Trident Racing played a main role in the first race of the GP2 Asia Series round at Sepang, Malaysia. Both drivers, Harald Schlegelmilch and Ho Pin Tung, ran constantly into the points zone, before a contact with each other prevented them to score a third and a fourth place.
Due to a lucky strike, the aftermath saw Schlegelmilch end up in 8th place, taking the pole spot for Race 2. The Latvian driver will lead the pack tomorrow, while Ho Pin Tung was forced to retire after the contact, and will be starting from 16th place.
The race itself was heavily conditioned by the weather, as rain started to fall consistently right after the start. A number of contacts happened on lap 1 forced race control to red-flag the session at the end of the successive one, freezing the field with Tung and Schlegelmilch locked up in 4th and 7th place. At the re-start, the duo stayed clean, clocking several impressive laptimes. Unfortunately, Tung spun and went down to 8th, getting closer to Schlegelmilch. Then, due to the track getting dry again, the team called drivers to replace their tires again on two successive laps, with Tung finding himself side-by-side with team-mate while exiting the pit-lane. A contact followed shortly, compromising an almost acquired podium finish, and a very valuable fourth place: Tung was forced to retire, while Schlegelmilch lost 5 positions and ended up in 8th. Trident Racing now hopes to take advantage of tomorrow`s pole start, finally recovering, and staying, at the top of the charts with the great potential shown until now.
"I`m satisfied with my on-track job today. Maybe I was too cautious in the final stages on slick tires, but after the contact with Tung I was afraid about the car`s condition. I focused in taking the 8th spot, that would have allowed me to take off from the pole. The start was a true mayhem: I tried to move through the huge amount of debris and avoid mistakes. I`m also proud of the sequence of quick laps I was able to turn, finally showing my true potential and the car`s performance level. I`m really looking forward to Race 2 and I hope, if I can make a wish, that rain will be back for the whole distance...".
Ho Pin Tung
"I think I made a great start, as I found myself in sixth after passing 3 cars right away and, thanks to a contact, I moved up to 4th behind Fairuz Fauzy. At that point I lost time because I was running faster than him, and I committed a mistake that cost me 4 positions. After the pit-stop, I was caught by surprise by the cold slick tires. It`s a shame because we had the concrete possibility to clinch a podium finish. We`ll see tomorrow: I hope to be back in points".
