Qi-Meritus.Mahara enjoys a good first day at Dubai race track

The newly born GP2 Asia series started today with a two day test session at the Dubai circuit. The newly appointed Qi-Meritus.Mahara drivers, Luca Filippi and Hiroki Yoshimoto got their first taste of their new car in an action-packed first day on track.

It was a dry and sunny day in Dubai as the team took to the track aiming to set a good pace despite the poor grip levels. As the day wore on, the track got better and towards the end of the afternoon Luca Filippi led the team finishing fourth fastest with his quickest lap at 1m23.079s. Team mate Hiroki Yoshimoto worked on a different programme and set a best lap of 1m26.128s.

The team's main goal for the first day of testing was to get as familiarize the drives as much as possible and complete as much mileage as possible in the new 2008 car that they had never touched before. The other goal was to continue working on adapting the tyre programme with Bridgestones, the official tyre partner of the series.

Qi-Meritus.Mahara enjoyed a trouble-free day with the two drivers completing 38 laps. This was significant progress especially since the teams still have another three days of testing left before the first race of the season.

Peter Thompson, President and team founder, Qi-Meritus.Mahara: "I have been looking forward seeing the first lap of our GP2 Asia car since our entry was confirmed. It is a good first day of work. Our engineers and drivers got through a lot with a car we have never run before. The team has been working really well together coming to grips with a completely new series."

Hiroki Yoshimoto (car Nr 26) indicates: "I had a good day. We might possibly could have gotten through a little more today, but we still achieved a lot. We worked on the setup, fine tuning the suspension, ride height, roll bars and springs. The team is already finding its rhythm around the car. It's a shame I didn't get a chance to complete a proper flying lap because the red flag disrupted the session."

Luca Filippi (car Nr 27): "I am very pleased. I honestly thought the potential was there from the start of the project and it certainly is. My times were good towards the end of the day. It was a very encouraging day. The hard work between yesterday and today is paying off. We need to continue learning about the car."
