SPECTACULAR RESULT FOR THE SPANISH TEAM IN THE NIGHT QUALIFICATION SESSION IN QATAR.
For the first time we have witnessed an official night-time qualification session at the Losail International Circuit, Qatar and part of the GP2 Asia Series 2009. This is a historic first with the races and training sessions under lights just as the F1 had done last season with the inaugural Singapore Grand prix.
Barwa Internacional Campos Team has given its main sponsor a great boost with a fantastic result on home soil, Qatar. Sergio Perez, after his marvellous debut victory in the last round of the championship, starts from second position on the starting grid and his team-mate Vitaly Petrov just one place behind in third.
The qualifiers have taken place in what were difficult conditions with sand storms making driving very complicated for drivers and teams alike. Poor visibility, problems with grip and the set up of the car, made life hard for all involved.
The session was dominated by the two drivers representing the Barwa Internacional Campos Team. During a great part of the qualifications they were lying first and second in the standings but a red flag with only 3 minutes to go of the session meant that both drivers were forced to stop`when both were on a fastest lap time. When they restarted, Vitaly was on provisional pole but on the last lap his time was bettered by Hulkenberg. Sergio, who had made a modest start to the session was able to come good in the final stages with a magnificent second place on the grid.
Sergio Perez: "To be honest I've enjoyed driving at night. It's a new experience and a new challenge but that goes for everybody out there. I think I can improve my lap time because they weren't my best partials. We'll try to get a good start even though I'm starting on the dirty side of the track and this time around that could be important. It's a long race so we'll be out there doing our best. What's good is that Vitaly and I are in good shape to be battling for the victory with Niko or at least to get a spot on the winner's rostrum. However in these weather conditions anything could happen."
Vitaly Petrov: "I'm happy because after having been the quickest in free practice, I've been in the leading positions during nearly the whole qualification session. However, I did make one or two little mistakes on my fastest lap which meant that I lost at least two or three tenths of a second. Tomorrow will be a very interesting race because with the conditions of the track no-one knows what will happen at the start. We will try to do the best we can because this is a very important event for the team. We will all be trying our best so that everything goes well this weekend".
