Ocean Racing Technology finds good pace in Abu Dhabi
Fabio Leimer best rookie of GP2 Asia test
Ocean Racing Technology concluded its second and final day of testing ahead of the season opening round of the GP2 Asia Series Saturday on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The Portuguese team gathered a great amount of data which will be an invaluable asset in their preparations for the first races of the season, which will take place in a week's time on the same circuit.
Behind the wheel of the team's two cars were, Alexander Rossi and Fabio Leimer both carried out an intense test routine that concentrated on adapting the car to the characteristics of the circuit, the GP2 Series having a sneak preview of the track that will host the Formula One World Championship finale at the same time as the opening round of the new GP2 Asia championship. Therefore, the Yas Marina circuit was an unknown for both the team and drivers until this weekend.
The young Swiss racer, Fabio Leimer finished his session by recording the 4th best time on the last day of the test, just 20 hundredths shy of Luca Filippi's best time, making him the best rookie of the two day session and he was very satisfied with the work he carried out: "It was a positive session! I got to grips really well on Friday and the day after we made some adjustments that helped improve the performance of the package. We have to fix a few details yet before next weekend but I'm satisfied with the results we achieved on the last set of tyres," Fabio explains. "I think we are on the right track and the first races should be interesting and full of more valuable lessons. I don't really like the first part of the track but all in all the circuit is a success."
Meanwhile, Alexander Rossi also adapted himself well to the car in terms of speed and efficiency. The North-American racer, who has only recently discovered European competition, was classified 5th on Friday, 30 hundredths of the best time set by Davide Valsecchi. This result is a reflection of an intelligent and accurate drive despite a dusty track that many drivers complained about. In fact, the Yas Marina layout was indeed covered in a rather thick dusty layer on the first day. "I think I learnt a great deal, especially as we had some problems finding the best balance. I think we'll now have to sit down and analyze all the data then to work on the problems we discovered. I was disappointed not to do better than P11 on Saturday but we ended the session on a positive note."
The third season of the GP2 Asia Series will open its doors on Friday October 30 on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi alongside the Formula One season finale.
