Yoong and Bamber ready for Dubai race
DUBAI (November 30 2008): My Qi-Meritus.Mahara drivers Alex Yoong and Earl Bamber believe their early arrival in Dubai will help them for the second leg of the GP2 Asia Series which will be held at the Dubai Autodrome on Friday and Saturday.
The Malaysian-Saudi team had a strong eight-point finish in the first round in Shanghai, China, in October by scoring points in the sprint and grand races. The team's early preparation paid off for both drivers with a podium finish for the youngest ever GP2 Asia driver, Earl Bamber (NZ), in his first race event.
Yoong and Bamber started their Dubai weekend early as they were guests of President of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, Mohammed Ben Sulayem's press conference today at ATCUAE HQ, in Al Mamzar, Dubai. It is an important event for the team due to their strong links with the Middle East through Saudi partner, Raad S. Abduljawad.
Yoong commented: "When Earl Bamber started in 2005, I was his tutor. Now we are team mates, in a highly competitive series. The team have gained experience over last year, the first season where they competed and all team members are very focused on podiums and wins this season."
The drivers are spending their days at the Monza team headquarters to prepare for the Dubai race where they will use Bridgestone's new soft compounds.
Bamber commented: "It has been a very interesting preparation time and I had a promising session working on the team's computer simulator. The good results from the last round have opened my eyes to what we can achieve. We are all completely focused on the next round to do another good job.
Raad S. Abduljawad, Team Chairman, My Qi-Meritus.Mahara commented, "I was delighted with the team's first results of the season. Bernie Ecclestone has given us the only Asian licence and we are determined to make it happen and not disappoint his faith in us. With Earl's profile we have now discovered that Asian motorpsort has the capability to produce champions from first race to end of the chain in higher categories."
Peter Thompson, president and team founder, My Qi-Meritus.Mahara: "Last Sunday we won our 32nd championship. Of course we are very happy to be able to develop the training around the team. We need good results for our sponsors and results for the driver's championship. The team went beyond the set goal to score points when participating in our first weekend of this season. These eight points are a great result and we are looking forward to some more development for the race in Dubai."
Dubai Mascot, camel Jum Jum, the main character of Jum Jum World created by Index Holding will accompany My Qi-Meritus.Mahara team and drivers during the Dubai Grand Racing on Friday and Saturday.
The team, conscious of their social responsibility in the UAE invited the UAE Down Syndrome Association and the Sweet Kidz, Children of diabetes to participate the Dubai Grand Racing. During the press conference the drivers invited and provided the tickets for the UAE Down Syndrome Association and for the Sweet Kidz to attend the Dubai Grand.
