Qi-Meritus.Mahara hopeful for points in race 2 in Bahrain
Just a few minutes after the Polish driver Kubica claimed his maiden pole position in F1 qualifying, Qi-Meritus.Mahara's Luca Filippi and Hiroki Yoshimoto took to the track for the start of the first of two GP2 Asia races this weekend, starting from 12th and 18th on the grid respectively.
The first corner of the first lap went without incident at the front, but Luca Filippi's hopes were washed out after being involved in an accident at the third corner as he was pushed off the track by Marco Bonanomi (Piquet Sport) who started spinning in front of him and almost caused him to fly off the track.
Meanwhile Hiroki Yoshimoto lead the race for two laps and ran in second place until five laps from the finish, but he was slowed down in his pit stop and only finished in 12th position.
Luca Filippi commented: "I had a reasonable start, but then I was not able to avoid the accident with Bonanomi who pushed me off. It's a real shame because the car was feeling great and the team had done such a good job setting it up since our qualifying yesterday and I had gained some positions in the race. I lost an opportunity to finish the race and score points. I am really sorry for the guys in the team. As for me, nothing to do, I just had to sit and watch the race. How frustrating not to be able to enjoy this circuit."
Hiroki Yoshimoto commented: "What a race! Today the pace of the car was ok. I pushed strongly in the first lap then there was a safety car out for four laps. At that point everyone else stopped to refuel and we had a bit of a misunderstanding in the team, as we thought we were not allowed to come in during the first two laps. In the end, it was a good move, and I decided not to come in. When the pace car came back, I was second behind Pavlovic and eventually took the lead and fastest lap. When I rejoined the race after my pit stop five laps before the end, I had to find my pace again and I started passing successively Herck, Schlegelmich and Ebrahim. But the race was not long enough for me to get into the points which is a shame."
Peter Thompson, president and team founder, Qi-Meritus.Mahara commented: "Of course I am disappointed because we proved we had a lot of pace, despite the bad luck that Luca suffered. But now it is the third event of the season with no points and I know the team is trying very hard. Let's hope for the entire team and drivers that tomorrow's second race will be rewarded with points."
