BAMBER IN BAHRAIN THIS WEEKEND

While Chris van der Drift takes over the reins of Black Beauty for the New Zealand round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport series at Taupo this weekend, fellow A1 Team New Zealand young gun Earl Bamber will be in Bahrain, competing at the third round of the 2008/09 GP2 Asia Series.

Bamber, who drives for Peter Thompson's Kuala Lumpur-based My Qi-Meritus.Mahara team, currently lies fifth in the overall points standings after a podium at the first round in China.

Since the rain-interrupted second series round in Dubai 18-year-old Wanganui driver Bamber has been home here in New Zealand. And he headed to Bahrain at the beginning of the week eager to get back behind the wheel of a car.

Describing the purpose-built F1-spec track in Bahrain as one of the most challenging on the 2008/09 GP2 Asia schedule he believes confidence under braking will be a key performance criteria this weekend.

"You need to believe in the car's performance and have no doubts that you can stop effectively. There are also several overtaking opportunities where you can make up crucial ground when other drivers tend to brake early."
