Max Chilton carried out a very convincing debut for the Ocean Racing Technology GP2 team on Friday at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi where the second round of the GP2 Asia championship is underway. 18th on the starting grid, the English driver drove a solid and intelligent race to climb his way back into the top eight and the points by the time the chequered flag fell. By crossing the line in eight, not only did he secure a point in his debut race, but he also secured pole position for race two.

"It was a good race, full of fights, pure madness! The car was excellent and on the last lap, when I was 9th, I was happy to be in the top 10. But 8th position is a dream result. I will take the start from the front and it is fabulous. I am relaxed now but I think the pressure and the adrenaline will return a few seconds before the lights go green," explained the young British driver.

For his teammate, Fabio Leimer, the weekend started well with a sixth place in practice, however a sandstorm blew in during qualifying and combined with an engine failure left him fighting for 14th spot on the starting grid. Unfortunately the following day saw more engine gremlins, which eventually put a halt to his first with six laps remaining for safety concerns due to his lack of pace. "We already had some problems during the qualifying session but the engine was fine at the beginning of the race. But after a few laps the engine was losing power coming out of the turns. It got worse with 6 laps to go and it was impossible to continue like back of the field. I'm expecting to have a good engine in order to secure the best possible result," he declared.

The second race in Abu Dhabi will begin on Saturday at 2:00PM (UK Time) and it can be followed live on Eurosport 2.
