GOOD RESULT FOR GIEDO VAN DER GARDE, 5th AND A GREAT PERFORMANCE FROM CHARLES PIC, WHO FINISHED 9th ASWELL AS THE WHOLE BARWA ADDAX TEAM.
Barwa Addax Team and its two drivers have had good performances today at the Yas Marina circuit, in Abu Dhabi, with Giedo van der Garde finishing up there in 5th place and Charles Pic, who made a great fight back to finish 9th.
The first race of the Asia series 2011, did not get off to the best of starts, particularly in the opening stages of the race. A tremendous accident happened right at the start when Dani Clos stalled his car from the fourth position of the starting grid and he was subsequently and brutally shunted from behind by the car of Luiz Razia, which in turn collided with rookie rival, Varhaug. After initially deciding to send out the "Safety car" , the race stewards were then enforced to red flag the event. The reason behind the red flag was that when all the drivers slowed down after receiving instruction to do so, Rodolfo Gonzalez who was obviously unaware of the events around him, collided hard with Charles Pic, seriously damaging the rear part of the car and ripping off the rear spoiler completely. The stewards were forced to postpone the restart, which was eventually done behind the safety car, until all the debris was removed from the track and the race could start once more, after having completed just two of the 36 laps scheduled for this race. The race had to be finished because of the time limit without having completed all the laps programmed.
Giedo van der Garde, drove a very sure and steady race. At the start he improved one position in the opening laps and was happy to settle for the same race rhythm as the other rivals who were ahead of him. He came in to make his compulsory "pit stop" on lap 12, which was quite a conservative move but he was in a solid race position with several points up for grabs. He kept competing hard throughout the whole race with a similar pace to the leading drivers. He was even able to make up ground in the latter part of the race and was fighting for a podium position right down to the wire. Tomorrow he will start from a very promising fourth position on the grid and will be hoping for a good result. Giedo has shown once more on the track that he is a very talented and very consistent driver.
Charles Pic has surprised just about everyone around. He started from 14th on the grid after having had a pretty unfortunate qualifying session due to being constantly hampered by traffic. When he was placed in the main peloton of drivers at the start of the race, his car was unfortunately shunted by another rival leaving it severely damaged and forcing him into the pits for emergency repair.
