THE SEASON GETS UNDER WAY FOR BARWA ADDAX TEAM.

GIEDO VAN DER GARDE QUALIFIES IN 5TH Y CHARLES PIC, 14TH

The fourth edition of the GP2 Asia series starts this weekend and consists of three events, with two races each weekend. The season gets under way at the Yas Marina circuit, in Abu Dhabi, while the other two events will take place at the Sakhir circuit, in Bahrain, the first of which will be the weekend 18th and 19th of February. The last round will be competed alongside the first Formula 1 Grand Prix of the 2011 season on the 12th and 13th of March.

One of the main attractions this season is the introduction of the new car, the third of its generation, GP2/11 and the new Pirelli tyres which will also be used in Formula 1 this season. All of these changes have given an extra motivation to both drivers and teams in this championship as it is fundamental in the development of the car with a view to being competitive in the GP2 Main Series. 13 teams with 2 drivers per team will make up the starting grid.

There have already been four days of testing in which Barwa Addax Team were left more than satisfied by the work carried out by the team and drivers competing in this season’s championship. So much so that both drivers of the Spanish team, Giedo van der Garde and Charles Pic, set times that were always among the five fastest and the Dutch driver posted the fastest lap time on the second day. The team decided to dedicate the following days of tests to the set up and the development of the car with a view to race conditions.

Today the practice sessions took place. In the morning free practice Charles Pic finished 9th and Giedo van der Garde, 17th. In the afternoon qualifying session, van der Garde finished in 5th place for tomorrow’s starting grid with a time of 1.36.658. Pic will start from 14th position after having set a time of 1.36.961. It is important to take into account that the first 14 drivers all finished within the same second.

The opening race of the championship will be competed for over 36 laps covering a distance of 170.280 Kms (or 60 minutes) and starts at 16,55 hr local time, Friday 11th.
