Stefano Coletti and Scuderia Coloni boasted an amazing recovery in the Feature Race of the Budapest GP2 weekend. The Monegasque driver, who was starting from P19 after being slowed by traffic in yesterday’s qualifying, took the flag in 10th place after an amazing race. Fabio Onidi, who was starting from P14, also made up some good ground and closed the race just behind his team mate in 11th place.

The start was very positive for the Italian team as Coletti immediately jumped to P14 and Onidi slotted just behind him in 15th place. One lap later Stefano had already passed Berthon for P13, and his recovery continued to P11 after mistakes by both Cecotto and Canamasas. One of the few drivers to opt for a start on medium tyres, Stefano entered the pits for his tyre change as late as lap 22, and when he got back on track he had a set of supersoft to make the most of. He did it passing Haryanto for P12, and then reached the top ten when Kral and Nasr went out of the race for a technical gremlin and a mistake respectively. Being quicker than the guys ahead Stefano pushed to put pressure on Leimer, but on a twisty track like Hungaroring finding room to overtake wasn’t an easy task.

Differently from Coletti, Onidi started on supersofts and so opted for an earlier pit-stop on lap 11. That dropped him to P18 in the first part of the race but then Fabio drove very consistently and lap after lap, as his rivals also served the mandatory tyre change, he recovered up to P12 relying on his very good pace. Then he also passed Haryanto on track to clinch a much deserved 11th place finish, completing a good result for the team.

Paolo Coloni: “Recovering nine places on a twisty track like Budapest, where overtaking is nearly as difficult as in Monaco, is really a good result so Stefano and the team really have to be praised for that. As I said yesterday, we knew that our speed was much better than the result we got in Qualifying and I’m happy that today we managed to prove that with a very quick pace from both Stefano and Fabio. Now we have a better starting position for tomorrow and judging from today’s competitiveness we can aim for a very good result”.
