SERGIO PEREZ, BARWA ADDAX TEAM DRIVER, JOINS F-1 CIRCUS.
4th DRIVER FROM THE SPANISH TEAM TO STEP UP TO THE MAXIMUM CLASS.
Barwa Addax Team have had more success with the news that Sergio Perez has signed up for the Sauber Formula 1 team for the 2011 season. The introduction of Sergio as official driver for the team owned by Peter Sauber means that the Spanish GP2 have now been the successful launch pad for 4 drivers to F1.
Sergio Perez, (26/01/1990) achieves Formula 1 status before the end of the current GP2 season in which he has been competing for Barwa Addax Team. With just one race left in Abu Dhabi, lies second overall in the general classification of the driver's championship. He has put up a brave fight against the overall leader, and only one driver has had more victories than him this season in what has been a magnificent campaign. So much so, that despite his tender age, he has been in the spotlight of consolidated teams in F1.
Sergio Perez steps up to Formula 1 with the backing of his major sponsor of Telmex and Barwa Addax Team. He even made his debut with Alejandro Agag's team in the 2008-09 Asia Series becoming, at the time, the youngest rookie to win a race in this class.
Sergio Perez: "When one achieves what every driver dreams of, being part Formula 1. it give me great pride representing my country all over the world. I'm very grateful to my sponsor Telmex and to Barwa Addax Team for the opportunity of getting to the highest level in my career and in the sport. My time spent with the team, in the Asia Series, as well as in Gp2 this season, has allowed me to develop in my preparation and experience as a driver. Furthermore, it has been a pleasure to be part of the team both personally and professionally speaking and thanks to their hard work and support I have successfully reached my main objective."
Alejandro Agag: "I would like to congratulate Sergio Perez, Carlos Slim and all the people involved at Telmex as well as Barwa Addax Team for having achieved the main objective of this class which is none other than to be a platform towards a future in Formula 1. Even though the task is a difficult one, we can feel satisfied with our efforts since we took over in 2007, because we have launched 4 drivers, Lucas Di Grassi, Vitaly Petrov, Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez to Formula 1 status. This is a demonstration of the prestige of this team which is capable of promoting one driver every year to the highest class, also taking into account the limited number of seats available in Formula 1. In addition, in this case we are talking about a very young driver with a great future, fulfilling Addax's determination to guide a Mexican driver to F-1, when others had their doubts."
