Barwa Addax Team drove their final race in the GP2 Series at the spectacular Yas Marina circuit. Unfortunately, the team was unable to put the icing on the cake with good results but there can be no doubting the extraordinary worked carried out by both drivers, Rio Haryanto and Jake Rosenzweig and that goes for the whole team as well.
However, luck would abandon him once more as a red flag was produced just as he had started his fast lap, ruining the performance of his tyres as he was incapable of getting the desired grip second time round. In the first race he made a good start which meant he climbed through the field from his backmarker position on the grid. His hopes of making a great fightback were dashed with a spectacular accident just ahead of him on the fifth corner which hampered his progress.
Although he worked hard to try and maintain his race rhythm, an unfortunate collision with Trummer damaged his steering making it very difficult to control the car and he was later forced to retire. In the second race he produced the best start of the weekend. He climbed his way through the field and managed to get to the leading group of drivers.
Although he was affected by the introduction of the safety car, which took away all the advantage he had built up over the drivers behind, he was able to hang on to the leading group to finish in a meritorious 11th position.
Jake Rosenzweig, Barwa Addax team official driver: "It has been a tough and unlucky year with Addax, however, I very much enjoyed working with everyone at the team. Everyone at addax is very knowledgeable and professional. I hope that our paths will cross again in the future"
Rio Haryanto finished the season with the same run of bad luck that has daunted him all year. He performed discreetly in the free practice and managed to improve in qualification to finish the session halfway up the field. All this despite a red flag which sentenced him to produce his fastest lap with lots of traffic on the circuit, especially in the last sector. In the first race he was forced to go along with the main peloton of drivers and despite a great pit stop, he was unable to wrestle clear from the main group and could only finish in 14th position.
In the second race, Rio showed signs of his true class. He was ready to put up a good showing and make up lost ground but in the first corner confusion he was hit by another driver which destroyed the right half of his nose cone. Nevertheless, Haryanto was able to produce some of the best battles this weekend despite having a damaged car. He frustrated more than one of his rivals with his driving ability.
The continuous overtaking and defending against rivals trying to overtake from behind enticed the cameras to give him a lot of television coverage and made for some thrilling moments, in what were really difficult circumstances for the Spanish team driver. He finished 12th and deserved to be rewarded with points.
Barwa Addax Team hand the reigns back to Campos Racing for the following season. We hope that they have a lot of success and can produce the kind of results the Spanish team has been used to over the years. We also wish all the best to both drivers. We are sure that Rio Haryanto will reach the goals he has set himself in the world of motor racing and that Jake Rosenzweig will continue to make great progress and we are convinced that he will be ready to be one of the regular drivers scoring points next season.
