BARWA ADDAX TEAM 2nd IN GP2 SERIES TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 2010.
SERGIO PEREZ 2nd. GIEDO VAN DER GARDE 7th.
The last race in the 2010 GP2 Series took place today at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The Spanish team, Barwa Addax Team, have finished runner's up in the overall constructor's championship. Sergio Perez has finished second in the driver's championship and Giedo van der Garde has ended the season in seventh place.
There were very few incidents which affected the overall outcome at the end of this championship. Sergio Perez started on the grid in 8th place and took risks at the start to get to his main rival, who started from second position. The Mexican driver made an important effort to get to the leading positions but when lying in sixth place he was involved in an incident with the fifth placed driver which left him out of the race when trying to overtake. This put an end to his race and his adventure in GP2 as he moves up to F1 next season.
Giedo van der Garde, started from last position, after his early retirement in yesterday's race. He also took risks in an effort to help the team and made a fantastic start. Just when he was making steady progress and had climbed to midfield position, he was handed a penalty which all but ruined his race. Despite the sanction, Giedo set the fastest race lap time with a big difference over the second best time demonstrating his ability and class, and with a little more luck he could have had a great weekend.
Alejandro Agag, (Team principal and owner): "The only thing left for me to do is thank and congratulate all the members of the team, from the first right down to the last, the illusion, the effort and work carried out throughout the whole season which has ensured a great final result. All of this despite a series of unfortunate circumstances, such as the breaking of a wheel jack or the failure of an engine, always on a Saturday and when we were in first place, which ruins all the hard work carried during the whole weekend and prevents you from scoring an important number of points in both championships.
Nevertheless Sergio, has finished 2nd overall and Giedo, 7th which on its own are good results but if you add to that the signing of Perez to the Formula 1 ranks and that a number of teams are interested in contracting Giedo's services, it's an impressive performance considering that this is the main objective of the teams in GP2.
In the team championship despite all the negative circumstances, we have finished in a creditable second position with options of winning the title right down to the last race. It's worthy of mention that since the team was restructured in 2007, we have not been off the podium at the end of the season finishing 3rd, 1st, 2nd and 2nd . We can state that since we took over the team, no other team has been able to match our results and we have promoted more drivers to Formula 1 than anyone in this period".
