SERGIO PEREZ DRIVES TO SENSATIOMAL VICTORY IN ABU DHABI.
BARWA ADDAX TEAM LEAD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP ONCE AGAIN.
GIEDO VAN DER GARDE INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT.
Barwa Addax Team, driver Sergio Perez, drove to a fantastic victory today at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, winning the race from start to finish and ensuring the runner's up position in the 2010 GP2 Series. His nearest rival is 19 points behind the Mexican driver. The Spanish team is back on top in the race for the constructor's title. The only negative incident was when Giedo van der Garde was forced to retire after colliding with a car that had lost control in front of him.
Sergio Perez drove a race which does justice to his billing. He started from second position on the grid, but as always he made a flying start and got to the first corner leading the rest of his rivals. From this moment on he started to pull away from the field, setting a race rhythm that nobody was able to match as he built up a big lead. His superiority was such that he was able to make his compulsory pit stop with tyre change included, without any pressure from the rest, showing that he the car and the team were well prepared, making it clear that they had come here to win. With this victory Sergio Perez has confirmed that he is ready for his new Formula 1 experience. This young twenty year old clearly has a marvellous future ahead of him.
Giedo van der Garde, set the eighth fastest time in qualification. He managed to brilliantly avoid contact with a rival at the first corner but on corner three he collided with a spinning car in front of him. It's a shame because Giedo had a good race rhythm and was hoping to put on a good show this weekend.
After this victory Barwa Addax Team is back in the lead for the team championship. Tomorrow they will be fighting it out for the last victory of the season and it should be exciting right to the end of tomorrow's final race. They have more or less secured the runner's up position, having increased their advantage to 10 points which means the third placed team would need at least a one-two or victory and third with fastest lap time in Sunday's race. Sergio Perez has assured second place overall in the driver's championship. The runner up has demonstrated once more that if he hadn't been dogged by bad luck and a series of unfortunate circumstances, he would clearly have been fighting it out for the driver's championship right to the very end. Giedo has also assured his seventh place overall and tomorrow he will have very Little opportunity to improve on his tally of points.
The knives are out and the final decision in the race for the team title will take place tomorrow, in Abu Dhabi, at 13,30 hrs local time over 22 laps covering a distance of 122,073 kilometers.
