New Zealand's Jonny McIntyre has taken out the open race of the fourth round of the Reward Insurance Australian Sports Sedan Championship. Whilst his AC Delco Chev Corvette cannot claim ASSC points, he did take a win in the Trans Tasman Challenge.

McIntyre was beaten off the start line by Tony Ricciardello in the West Australian Alfa/Chev but was touched from behind at the third corner of the opening lap by McIntyre and spun as a result.

McIntyre then stole a handy advantage until late in the race when second placed Darren Hossack aboard the Saab/Chev, began making inroads. However McIntyre had enough of a gap to maintain the lead.

In third place was the second of the NZ Tranzam cars, Bernie Gillon in a Ford Mustang who passed current ASSC leader Kerry Baily midway through the race. Baily was under pressure from the Calibra/Chev of Mark Stinson and Dean Randle's Saab/Chev before all three fell to the hard charging Ricciardello on a comeback through the field.

Stinson retired towards the end leaving Randle sixth ahead of Rodney Woods in an enthusiastic drive in his Holden Commodore/Chev, Stephen Lichtenberger (Mazda/Chev) and Graham Smith's Calibra/Fiat Turbo in tenth.

Prominent qualifiers Daniel Jameson was a non-starter after engine problems were discovered in the Jaguar/Chev and likewise Todd Wanless elected not to start his Ford Falcon. An early retirement was the Calibra/Chev of Ray Ayton which has been eighth on the opening lap.
