New Race Format Adds Extra Dimension To Wesbank V8 Event

A new race format will add a different dimension to the Wesbank V8 Championship event at the Vodacom Winter Nationals at AA Kyalami on July 21.

The Wesbank event will feature a single race to be run over 20 laps - and will count for double the championship points. This is a radical departure from the normal two heat format for the Wesbank brigade, with the race also including a compulsory refueling pit stop.

All cars will have to pit for refueling between laps 10 and 15 and must be stationary for a minimum time of 90 seconds. During the fuel stop the engine must be switched off, and no other work will be allowed on the car.

Brian Cook, chairman of SAMCAR, added that pit lane speed would be restricted to 80 km/h. Speed on pit lane will be monitored, and a 30 second penalty will be applied for exceeding the limit.

In another development reigning South African champion Stewart Macleod will be back in action when the Dark Dog Superbike Championship brigade return to AA Kyalami. Macleod (Dealer Team Suzuki) has been out of action since breaking his leg in a fall at AA Kyalami on May 5.

The Krugersdorp rider has been forced to sit out six races, and hopes of back-to-back national titles have disappeared. The AA Kyalami fall also ruled out a one off appearance for Macleod in a round of the World Supersport Championship in Germany - an outing that was hoped to be a stepping stone to Macleod gaining a permanent ride in the championship.

Macleod returns to a situation that currently sees Greg Dreyer (Autopage Cellular Honda) leading the championship from Vodacom Nashua Yamaha pair Russell Wood and Lance Isaacs. After his long layoff Macleod is likely to be a little rusty, and his supporters won't be expecting fireworks from him at this stage of his comeback.

The July 21 meeting also features national events for the Wesbank V8, Midas Production Car, Sasol Formula Ford and Engen Volkswagen Cup championships. A round of the Volkswagen Challenge regional championship has also been added to the race schedule, with the programme of events revised.

Gate entry is R30 per adult with children under 12 free, and the revised programme is as follows: <pre> SATURDAY 21 JULY 2001
